What is gingivitis?
Gingivitis, or gum inflammation, is an inflammatory process in the gum surrounding a tooth. It’s caused by plaque building up along the gumline. Gingivitis generally presents with sore, red, bleeding gums. The gum may also swell, which can increase the depth of the gum pocket. Gingivitis mainly occurs in children and young people, alongside tooth decay, also in baby teeth, when a child’s oral hygiene is consistently poor. Gingivitis is rare in children under six, with its incidence gradually increasing afterwards until puberty. During puberty, hormonal changes in the body also affect the development of gingivitis.
Unlike in adults, gingivitis rarely progresses to periodontitis in children, although signs of inflammation can be observed in most children, and their oral hygiene is usually not good, since their tissue protection mechanisms are still well-developed.
With good oral hygiene, the inflammation usually subsides within 5 days, and the gum returns to its normal shape and light pink colour.
